The Earth has always been our home, our refuge. It provided us the good resources of clear water, fresh air, minerals and food, it provided us the means to survive. The human civilization advanced through the ages with their increasing intellect. Kingdoms were forged, the mightiest Kingdom, Astergard, triumphed and conquered all the weaker nations.
Soon the all of the world's nations, and kingdoms were united under one of the two reigning powers, the northern hemisphere, now the Empire of Astergard or the southern hemisphere, the Empire of Erestide. That is all, but one. Ironically the small continent located right in the center of the two warring hemispheres remained untouched, and uncontested - the Regnant Sovereign.
It was known that the citizens of the Regnant Sovereign were blessed with innately superior mental physique and physical capabilities in addition to being born with latent abilities that were on the verge of mystical sorcery. On one hand, their physical stature don't match up to the warriors of Astergard, they weren't as tall nor muscular. Neither were they as versed in politics and poetry as the strategists of Erestide.
However, they survived in the inhospitable deserts for months while the warriors of Astergard withered and died in the scorching heat, during the time before the two Empires rose up in the battle for supremacy, back when the two were still neutral and competing in an endurance tournament.
They scaled mountains in hours with the barest necessities and supplies, while the finest mountain scalers across the lands took days. The tundra snow wolves, a widely recognized menace was widely recognized as a highly dangerous animal. Weighing almost 400 pounds of lean muscle and flesh, the snow wolves were often the final objective for in the test of manhood and combat ability for coming of age young adults over the world.
Contrary, they were nothing more than playthings for Regnants whose children learned basic combat footwork the moment they learnt to walk. Young adolescent, just entering their teens were capable of taking them down with nothing more than a short sword.
Just as quickly as it had begun, the war died down, and peace prevailed once again, with neither of the two powers making a move on Regnant Sovereign. The years seemed peaceful, quiet and riches abound between the two Empires tentative trades. Paradoxically, the tranquilness of the peace that pervaded diswrought the battle hardened Astergard and the unnerved the Erestide strategists.
Until the day Mother Earth turned herself against all living creatures. Beastly creatures from the nether world, Ghasts invaded and spit exploding fireballs, leaving ashes in their wake as Mother Earth bubbled and volcanoes spewed forth. The dead arose as Zombies, spreading their foul infestation. The tundra snow wolves, once passive became aggressive and killed many with spiders mutating into large ones with inhuman agility.
Despondence creeped into the hearts of men. When it seemed that they had triumphed, a new wave of attack come on every night, swarms of giant spiders and mutilated animated bones of skeleton archers slaughtered men. What is the origin of this perverted force of evil? This question rung true in the frightened mothers as they clutch their child at night, praying for that they make it through. The encroaching darkness soon ate into Mother Earth as land mass, water and all physical matter started crumbling.
Mother Earth was being eaten away by the darkness into nothingness. The Regnants gathered all able warriors and scholars, men, women and children, none were discriminated. All with ability volunteered and formed the elite Legion army.
Breakthrough came when the latent powers of Regnants were finally unlocked in the dire times of what was to be known, the Holocaust. Men, blessed with powers to counteract against the evil sprung up as Magus. They unleashed their raw powers, haphazardly, rash and uncontrolled at first, but were quickly mastered. The Legion army kept their capital city, Xenospire, safe and established the warfront Necrosis.
Receiving supplies from the neighbouring town of Avellion, the Legion army managed to put up a commendable defence as they bought time for their Magus to fully master their newly found powers.
The Empires of Astergard and Erestide watched in horror as their villages and towns were consumed by the darkness. Continents faded into oblivion, oceans engulfed. The encroaching darkness consumed the earth from around, the citizens of the two Empires rushed to make their way to Regnant Sovereign, located in the center, whom would survive the longest. The reigning monarchies however, were stubborn and refused to give in. They were consumed.
As the vestiges of Mother Earth faded away and it seemed that even Regnant Sovereign would be engulfed in the void that now surrounded them, a blinding light of pure energy radiated forth from Xenospire. The Magus had finally gain dominion over their powers and erected a barrier around their kingdom just in time.
The men cheered and women wept, but the Holocaust was not over. The Magus had managed to push back the Ghasts back into their nether realm and with great difficulty keep the evil at bay during the day that burned the tainted bones and flesh of the foul creatures. Nonetheless they spawned at night.
You are a traveller in these dark times where the shadow has engulfed Legion and the world, of unknown origin. All citizens of Astergard and Erestide were inducted into Regnant. In these times, what would your story be? Would you rise up and vie for domnion over the wilderness lands? Would you form your own town of mercenaries that rival the power of Legion? Your journey begins in the town of Avellion in this chapter of Legion: Shadows.
