    Warning! Possible Issue!

Post by Force2Reckon on Fri Aug 19, 2011 6:06 pm

Not to cause alarm but, my desktop got a virus last night, not a serious one I think it's just a minor sircam virus, but the only thing that was used for was this server :S I'm worried a player may have logged on with that on their computer. The computer is still very usable with the virus but it makes all .exe and similar files undetected, in other words it asks you what you would like to run them as. If you right click them and click "Run As" whatever your option is (mine is run as admin) than they'll work fin and dandy. I suggest everybody take their local virus scanner and do a once over of their system just in case. It's not a harmful virus, this one isn't I mean, there are other FAR more destructive versions of this virus, glad to get hit by something small.

This may not have been transferred through the server, my dad or mom may have used it for something after I went to sleep (3 hours ago?) but they woke me up and told me I'm stuck awake now.

Just run the scan real quick guys, and if possible search the data transfers to see if there is any unusual change in what was being sent or recieved. Namely new or repeated files being run through the server, etc. I dont know if you can actually do that but if you can... ya.

Sorry Smile tryin to protect ya guys a bit, hopefully my dad just watched a "video" of some sort this morning before work -_-

You can't force players to download files from a Minecraft server.

I'm sorry if I implied it was downloaded... it is a free transfer, it just piggybacks from one system to another. kind of like an infectious disease, it hops on the outgoing from someone connected to your server, gets in the server, than hops on all outgoing from there to anybody else, however since no one else has had problems it is highly unlikely that it came from here... just wanted to let you guys know in case something funky started happening to your comps No

Oh ya and it's not a minor SirCam, this is a serious problem, if anyone knows how I could fix it that would be awesome, lol.

I tried a manual search and destroy but once I got rid of the root problem it popped up like 12 new av virus things, where it gives a bunch of false virus claims than requests you download something... or pay for something...

1:that's a typical windows defender (fake software) virus,
2: lime Rez said you can't send things through minecraft nor piggy back with out root password or some kind of direct ascess,
3: I have personally hack checked server, what ever vps or what ever he is using is truly secure, unless some one with some serious power comes along we are fine.

I will post some thing in general for removing viruses like that one, untill then try not to restart your computer, and stop what ever your doing close every thing, run a virus scan. And stay off the computer...

It's fine now jz, I hadn't had to fight a virus in awhile plus I didnt know how secure his server was, I know servers where this thing would have spread to 100's of people. Once I played with it for awhile I thoroughly annihilated the damn thing, or at least all references to it in the registry, and twelve different virus scanners I ran, are gone, all acknowledgement or the thought of it even having existed is gone. Ye I'm gonna major in CS, specifically programming, so I've done some programming studies, not as much as most people have by my age when their serious like me, I actually went out and screwed around with friends... So I dont have as much experience as say, a guy a year yonger than me, with my fervor for it would have, but I still know my code pretty well, Java, C++, HTML, I'm fairly proficient with them, I know a little bit about computer language/binary (cant remember if their different things or not) and some other stuff so... I plan on trying to figure out how to cook up plugins and mods so I can help more with the server even if I cant always play it. Seeing as I may only get to play 2-3 times a week starting really soon...

I was the only kid at my hschool who could talk to the geeks/nerds and than go sit at the jock table without being messed with Razz lol.
